A historic gathering at the oasis of Ghadir Khumm, midway between Makkah and Madinah, following the Farewell Pilgrimage. In front of over 100,000 returning pilgrims, Prophet Muhammad delivered a profound sermon. He raised the hand of Imam Ali and declared: 'Of whomsoever I am master (Mawla), this Ali is his master.' This was the official, divinely-ordained designation of Ali as the immediate political and spiritual successor (Imam) and successor caliph. This was followed by the revelation of the final verse of the Quran (5:3) declaring the perfection of the religion.
